  • Letter home - last week of term

    Published 18/12/23

    Dear Parent/ Carer,

Thank you for all of your support this half term, we have had a number of really special events and experiences in school, which we will share with you in our half termly newsletter.

Term ends on Thursday 21st December at 15:05 and school reopens on Tuesday 9th January  at 08:25.

In January, please remind your child of the importance of being ready to learn every morning; this includes arriving on time with a planner, full pencil case and a school bag.  All students must have a school tie - new ties can be purchased for £5 from student reception.

Please see below for some key dates:

Wednesday 20th December: Inflatable sessions in school - all students to attend school in full Co-op branded PE kit

Thursday 21st December: School ends 15:05

Tuesday 9th January: School re-opens to all students

    Thursday 11th January Year 11 and Year 9 Parent's Evening - 14:00 - 17:50 School closes at 13:30 to students

    ClassCharts

ClassCharts will no longer work after the Christmas break as we have moved to a new system for accessing information about your child and for paying for school meals. You will receive information about this when your child returns to school in January.

    Key Reminders

The walking bus leaves school from the front entrance at 15:15 every evening with Miss Fox.

The school library is open before and after school every day for students who like a quiet space to work or read.

Students have homework to complete every evening and this can be found in their planners. Please speak with your child about the importance of homework; students who complete regular homework perform better in exams than those who do not.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas break with your family and friends and wish you all the very best for 2024.

    Yours Faithfully

    Miss N Jones

  • Y9 & 11 Parent's Evening

    Published 18/12/23

    Dear Parent or Guardian,

    Year 9 & 11 Parent’s Evening and Year 9 Options evening - Thursday 11th January 2024 - 2:00pm-6pm

I would like to invite you to attend our Parent’s Evening and year 9 Options Evening on the 11th of January 2024. This is an important evening and provides you with an opportunity to talk to your child’s subject teachers about their progress and how you can support them at home.

In the evening you will have the opportunity to meet with subject teachers and discuss their progress in the subject, and what they need to do to improve their outcomes. If your child is in Year 9 it is also an opportunity to discuss their GCSE option choices - the deadline for the options forms is also this date.

Your child should begin making appointments with subject teachers in lessons from today. Please help them by making sure they know what times you are available to attend. If they have not made appointments with staff you are still welcome to attend, but we cannot guarantee that you will be able to see all their subject teachers. The sheet for them to record their appointment times is attached to this letter.

I look forward to seeing you there.

    Yours faithfully

    Mrs Field

    Deputy Headteacher

  • Year 11

    Published 06/12/23

    Dear Parent/Carer,

Year 11 students have shown exceptional commitment, resilience and focus throughout their mock examinations. With three weeks remaining this term, it is essential that this positive academic attitude continues.

Students will receive their mock results on Wednesday 13th December. During the afternoon, they will reflect on their results and set targets to support their progress and outcomes.

Please find below some tips to support your students with their revision and home learning:

English: Use the exam board websites for previous papers/mark schemes as well as student friendly support (English Language: www.eduqas.co.uk; English Literature: www.aqa.org.uk). Make sure you know your narrative word for word. Use the coloured quote cards to practise Look/Cover/Write/Check then practise quote explosions. In addition, students have been provided with Snap revision books for each Literature text which they can use to create their own revision notes.

Maths: Please use the Mock Question-Level-Analysis (QLA) given to you by your teacher to Thursday evenings after school. Please view the Maths Display board on the BF corridor for more relevant information.

Science: Make question and answer flash cards using the revision guides or videos. Practise repeating them until they are learnt. Use the AQA website to practise past papers (https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/gcse). Complete these under timed conditions and mark them. Use videos from Free Science Lessons to make notes on the required practical methods.

    Why good attendance matters

Regular school attendance is an important part of giving children the best possible start in life. The aim should be to attend 100% of the time. Students who miss school frequently can fall behind with their work and do less well in examples. Good attendance also shows potential employers that a young person is reliable.

It is also important to arrive at school on time. If a child arrives late for school every day, their learning begins to suffer.

    Upcoming Events:

Year 11 Revision - EC 1st January 2024 - Times will be communicated WC 18th December

    Year 11 Information Evening - 11th January 2024 - 14:30 - 18:00

A reminder that the Year 11 Prom will take place at The Mansion, Roundhay Park.

This is a really exciting event for Year 11 students and a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the end of their time with us before beginning new life adventures.

    The Prom includes:

    • A buffet for food and soft drinks

    • A space for photos to be taken inside and outside the front of the venue

    • A DJ and disco

    • Awards and celebrations

This will take place on Friday 28th June 2024 - £5 contribution per ticket

    Arrival 18:30, Awards 19:30, Food 20:00, DJ and Disco 20:00 - 10:30, End of Prom 10:30

I have attached a link for your reference if you wish to have a look at the virtual tour of the venue.

We have extended the date for prom payment to Friday 15th December. Please ensure that your permission slip is returned to Miss Pearson or Mrs Palmer along with £5 to secure a place.

  • More Good Days at School

    Published 04/12/23

    Dear parent/carer/guardian,

Hello, and thank you for reading this letter. My name’s Julian and I work at Anna Freud. I’m working with your school on a research project to look at the impact of support for young people to be healthy and happy at school.

I’m passionate about this project for many reasons. I’ve seen how children in my family seem to be increasingly experiencing a range of challenges that undermine their mental health and I want to know what this might mean for them and other children like them.

To look at this, we are working with lots of different schools. All of them are continuing with the existing wellbeing support they provide to young people. In half of the schools, staff will be trained to work with pupils differently by learning more about how things people have experience might impact on them. We don’t know if this different way of working with pupils is better, worse, or the same as existing wellbeing support. This is what we want to find out in the research. The findings from this research will be used to inform how schools support the wellbeing of their pupils in the future.

If you click on the following link (https://kca.training/project/youth-endowment-fund) and go to “Materials to take part in the study for parents and guardians”, you can find attachments for the information sheet, which contains more details about who we are, what we’re doing, and why we’re doing it. There you can also find a document that tells you about how your child’s data would be used if they were to take part (the data we collect will not be connected to specific children, and we will not share an individual child’s data with their school or any other bodies).

If you do not want your child to take part in the study, they don’t have to. It’s a decision you may want to take together. We would like as many people as possible to take part in order to aid our understanding about what makes a difference for children and their schools. If you and your child choose not to take part, it will not affect their rights or support. Please think with your child about whether now is a good time for them to take part or not.

If you DO NOT want your child to take part, please let us know by completing this opt-out form for parents/carers and guardians: https://redcap.idhs.ucl.ac.uk/surveys/?s=4YWYX4WH7TPRFHMX

If you are happy for them to take part, you do not need to do anything.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about this study. You can find me at julian.childs@annafreud.org

Thank you again for your time,

    Julian Edbrooke-Childs

  • River of Hope

    Published 28/11/23

A group of our Year 8 and 9 students have taken part in the River of Hope Project this year with some other schools in Leeds as part of Leeds 2023 events.

Their flags, created as part of the project using their artwork, are currently being displayed by the river near the Armories, so it'd be great if you are in the area if you could pop by & see them.

A video has been made of the project which features a number of our students. As part of the project, a joint poem was written by students from different schools. Our students wrote the first part of the poem which expresses how rivers and the water in them link all the countries in the world and so the river in Leeds links them to their countries. You can hear our students reading their part of the poem in the video & saying the names of their countries.

  • Recognition Awards Evening

    Published 09/11/23

This annual event was held at Royal Armouries in Leeds this year. A fabulous evening that celebrates staff achievements and showcases the wonderful musicians from some of our academies within the trust. This year our academy rose to the occasion. Our Music students Daniel Kwateng, Lilia Tariket, Thomas Shewaye and Emily Flynn took centre stage to perform songs by Alicia Keys and Billie EIlish, what a show they put on! They did the school, staff, our community and most importantly themselves proud and clearly enjoyed themselves along the way. All the hard work paid off, well done guys!
