University of Leeds - Law and Social Science Outreach

Futures and Summer School - now accepting expressions of interest

By way of University of Leeds outreachyear 12 students are also welcome to register an expression of interest for our Political Futures and Environment Futures programmes; similar to Pathways to Law, these are extended programmes that include a number of campus days and online webinars. Successful completion (including written assessment) of Political Futures gives students a guaranteed contextual offer for studying a Politics degree at Leeds. Applications for our Futures programme open in November. Students can register their interest for all our Futures programmes here: Leeds Futures 2025 - Registration of Interest (office.com)  Furthermore, our Summer School runs every June for students interested in the Social Sciences; year 12 students can register their interest here: University of Leeds Summer Schools 2025 - Expression of Interest (jisc.ac.uk) Futures programmes and the summer school are open to students nationwide, and we are often able to offer travel bursaries.

Pathways to Law: Applications now open!

Working in partnership with the Sutton Trust – a social mobility charity – I run the Pathways to Law programme, a scheme that runs from autumn of year 12 till spring of year 13, and gives students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds a step up into the legal field through activities such as: work experience with prestigious firms; the opportunity to attend a residential law conference; access to skills webinars and workshops; and various other activities that help boost their knowledge, skills, and experience in the world of law. Students are able to make informed decisions about their education and careers, and if they do choose to pursue law, they are given an excellent foundation for taking their next steps. As well as this, students may be eligible for a contextual (reduced) offer to a number of Pathways to Law universities, including the University of Leeds. Many students feel that the programme opens doors for them that they would never have had access to without Pathways to Law, and with an alumni community of over 60, 000, the programme can help lead to a wide range of prestigious and fulfilling careers.

The programme is completely free, with all travel and associated costs being covered for students. Events run on average every 6 weeks and tend to be outside of school/college hours (though there is a small number of events – approximately three - when they would need to attend during the school day, though this is kept to an absolute minimum). There are no assessments or marked work associated with the programme; completion of the scheme is through attendance alone.

Applications are now open for the 2024-26 Leeds programme. To be eligible, students need to:

  • meet the specified social mobility criteria,
  • have performed to a certain standard at GCSE or equivalent (please note there are no subject requirements), and
  • live within 90 minutes’ commuting time by public transport to the University of Leeds. It is very important that they can reach the University of Leeds in this time frame as some events start early or finish late in the evening, and students will likely need to commute to Leeds for their work experience, so living further away creates substantial logistical difficulties. Students further afield may wish to apply for the online version of the programme.

More information on the programme and eligibility, as well as the application platform, can be found here: Pathways to Law - Sutton Trust Pathways Students have until early November to apply, with the first event for the Leeds cohort being the online launch on November 18th and in-person welcome event on November 20th.

The Sutton Trust have an online session about their programmes coming up in October – please feel free to share the below info with your students:
