Half term 1 – What is the point of Geography?

Half term 2 – How is our ‘sense of place’ created?

Half term 3 – Survival and adaptation in ecosystems

Half term 4 – How do geographers measure and predict weather and climate?

Half term 5 – Living with nature: humans and rivers

Half term 6- End of year assessment and revision

Assessments

In each topic there are two assessments- one mid and one end topic. The mid topic is worth 20 marks and the end topic 30 marks. The mid topic is split into three sections: demonstrate knowledge, connecting concepts and place and understanding/using data. The end topic has the same three sections with an additional section testing synoptic knowledge- how topics previously studied link to the present one, requiring students to test and apply their memory.

Each topic has a recall grid homework- a grid with questions and answers on the back. Students need to memorise each column for a weekly test where they need to gain at least half marks to pass.

At the end of the year is a cumulative assessment which tests memory of topics and skills throughout the year.

KS4 Curriculum (Year 10 &11)

Year 10 Theme/Topics

Year 10 geographers will cover all content needed for Paper 1. In Half term 6 they will begin to focus on paper 3, going on a fieldwork trip during this half term.

Half term 1-Introduction to geography GCSE, Challenge of natural hazards

Half term 2- Challenge of natural hazards

Half term 3- UK landscapes: Rivers

Half term 4- UK landscapes: Coasts

Half term 5- Living World

Half term 6- Living World, paper 3- theory of fieldwork, data collection/presentation and our fieldwork- in theory and practice

Key Themes/Topics Year 11

Year 11 geographers will cover all content needed for Paper 2 and 3 while revising paper 1 through recall grids.

Half term 1-Challenge of resource management

Half term 2- Challenge of resource management/urban issues

Half term 3- Urban issues and Economic world

Half term 4- Economic World

Half term 5- Paper 3, revision of paper 1 and 2

Half term 6- Exams begin/study leave

Assessments

After each topic students complete a GCSE style assessment. After each section is covered e.g. the entire Living World unit, a longer assessment is completed which is then made cumulative after each unit is completed. Students complete mocks in June of year 10 (paper 1), October/November of year 11 (paper 1, paper 2 section, paper 3 complete) and March of year 11 (paper 1, 2 and 3 entire papers).

Three final written examinations in year 11

Paper 1 – Physical Geography: Challenge of Natural Hazards, Living world, UK landscapes: coasts and rivers,  1 hr 30 mins

Paper 2 – Human Geography: Resource management, Economic world, Urban Issues  1 hr 30 mins

Paper 3 – Geographical applications: fieldwork and issue evaluation (pre-release) 1hr 15 mins
