Component 1 – Human Lifespan Development

During Component 1, students will:

·         explore how individuals develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually over time.

·         investigate how various factors, events and choices impact individual’s growth and development.

·         Discover how people adapt to life events and cope with making changes.

Component 2 – Health and Social Care Services and Values

During Component 2, students will:

·         learn which health and social care services are available.

·         identify why people might need to use these services.

·         discover who’s involved in providing these services

·         explore what might stop people from accessing the services they need.

·         look at the care values the sector has to make sure people get the care and protection they need.

 

BTEC Level 1/2 First Award in Health and Social Care 

Unit 3 – Effective Communication in Health and Social Care

In this unit, students will learn how to communicate effectively within a health and social care environment. They will investigate and learn about different forms of communication, understand barriers to communication and be able to communicate effectively with service users in a health and social care setting. They will be assessed both practically and through written assignments.

Unit 6 – The Impact of Nutrition on Health and Wellbeing

In this unit, students will explore the nutritional needs of individuals at different stages of their lives. They will also learn more about the specific diets that some individuals need, for example individuals with allergies or other particular dietary needs. This unit will also enable them to understand some of the personal preferences individuals may have with regard to their diet. Students will apply this knowledge and understanding to create nutritional plans for individuals with special dietary needs, which will develop their nutritional planning skills. They will be assessed through written assignments.

BTEC Level 1/2 Technical Award in Health and Social Care

Component 3 – Health and Wellbeing

During Component 3, students will:

·         learn what ‘being healthy’ means to different people.

·         explore the different factors that might influence health and wellbeing.

·         identify key health indicators and how to interpret them.

·         assess an individual’s health using what they’ve learned.

·         create a health and wellbeing improvement plan for that person which includes targets and recommendations of support services available.

·         reflect on the potential changes the person may face when putting the plan into action.

BTEC Level 1/2 First Award in Health and Social Care 

Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development

In this unit, students will gain an understanding of lifespan development, which is essential when working in health and social care, as they will be able to appreciate the care needs of individuals at different life stages. This understanding is required for a wide range of health and social care roles including nursing, social work, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and dieticians. They will be assessed through a written examination.

Unit 2: Health and Social Care Values

In this unit students will gain an understanding of how these care values are applied in health and social care settings and their importance to work in the sector. They will apply these values in practice. These care values include adapting activities and environments to meet individual needs, promoting choice and using individuals’ preferred methods of communication. Through this activity, students will develop skills that will be of use in all careers in the health and social care sector. The values described in this unit may be applied to daily life and to a variety of careers outside the health and social care sector. They will be assessed both practically and through written assignments.

Unit 8 – Investigating Rights and Responsibilities at Work

The aim of this unit is for students to develop knowledge of employee rights and responsibilities, employer responsibilities and how the rights of employees are upheld in the workplace.

Unit 13 – Personal Care in Health and Social Care

The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the personal and emotional care needs of individuals, the skills needed to provide personal care for others, and procedures relating to personal care.

Unit 17 – Promoting Healthy Eating in Care

This unit aims to develop students’ knowledge of healthy drinks and snacks and how food contributes to health. They will have the opportunity to prepare healthy drinks and snacks.

Unit 18 – Communication with Adults and Children in Health and Social Care

The aim of this unit is to introduce students to different types of communication, barriers to communication and ways to communicate with adults and children in health and social care settings.
